First Time Trying Cryotherapy? Here's Exactly What to Expect
Three minutes, tops. That's the whole thing.
If you've been curious about cryotherapy but keep picturing yourself shivering in a walk-in freezer, take a breath. It's not that. Here's what your first session actually looks like, from the moment you walk in to the moment you leave feeling like a new person.
What is cryotherapy, in plain English?
Cryotherapy exposes your body to sub-zero temperatures for one to three minutes. That brief burst of cold triggers your body's natural repair response: blood rushes to your core, then floods back out carrying oxygen and nutrients. The result is less inflammation, faster muscle recovery, better sleep, and a mood boost that regulars will not stop talking about.
People book cryo for sore muscles, chronic pain, post-workout recovery, stress, and honestly, because it makes you feel incredible.
Does cryotherapy hurt?
No. It's cold, obviously. But it's a dry cold, which feels completely different from jumping into an icy lake. Most first-timers say the last 30 seconds are the challenging part, and then it's over. You're in control the entire time. We can dial the temperature and windchill up or down, you can step out whenever you want, and you never have to do the full three minutes.
At Recover Well, you also pick your own music and settings. Your session goes fast when your hype song is playing.
What do you wear during cryotherapy?
Less than you'd think. Underwear or a swimsuit, plus the gloves, socks, and slippers we provide to protect your hands and feet. The more skin, the better it works. We also provide a robe, and whether you wear it is completely up to you. You'll change privately, and you're never rushed.
One rule: come dry. No lotions or oils right before your session, and skip cryo immediately after a sweaty workout without toweling off first.
What happens when you arrive?
Here's the play-by-play for your first visit to our Norton Commons or Clarksville studio:
Check in and chat. We'll walk you through everything and answer any questions. This takes about five minutes.
Change and gear up. Private space, provided gloves, socks, and a robe if you want one.
Step in. Your session runs up to three minutes, and you don't have to do the whole thing. We control the temperature and windchill, so first-timers usually start shorter and milder. Everything is adjusted to you.
Warm up and hang out. Your body reheats itself within minutes. Most people feel a rush of energy right away. Grab a seat by the fireplace and stay a while.
Total time in the studio: about 20 minutes, unless you're stacking it with a sauna session. Which, for the record, we recommend.
Is cryotherapy safe?
For most people, yes. Sessions are short, supervised, and adjusted to your comfort level. That said, cryotherapy isn't recommended if you're pregnant or have certain heart or circulation conditions. When in doubt, check with your doctor first. We'd rather you ask than guess.
How will you feel afterward?
In a word: amazing. The endorphin rush hits the moment you step out. Aches and pains fade fast, your head clears, and you leave energized, focused, and ready to take on whatever the day throws at you. It's the closest thing to a reset button we've found.
The perks keep going after you leave. Many clients sleep noticeably better that night, and because the cold boosts circulation, some notice their skin looking brighter too.
One session feels incredible. Consistency is where the magic happens, which is why most of our regulars come two to three times a week.
The best part: you don't have to go alone
Everything at Recover Well can be done solo or with a friend. Bring your workout buddy, your sister, your coworker who's been "meaning to try it." Recovery is better together, and three minutes of cold is a lot more fun with someone laughing next to you.

FAQ
How long is a cryotherapy session? Up to three minutes in the chamber, and shorter is fine. Plan for about 20 minutes total, including check-in and changing.
How cold does it get? Well below zero, but it's a dry cold that most people tolerate easily. We adjust the temperature and windchill to your comfort, especially for first-timers.
Can I do cryotherapy and infrared sauna on the same day? Yes, and pairing them is one of our favorite recommendations. The hot-cold combo, called contrast therapy, can amplify the benefits of both. We wrote a whole guide on which to do first.
How much does cryotherapy cost in Louisville? Less than you'd expect for how it feels. Check our current pricing and membership options on our booking page, or ask us when you come in.
Do I need to book ahead? Booking ahead guarantees your spot, but walk-ins are welcome when we have availability.
