Sauna or Cryotherapy First? How to Choose Your Contrast Therapy Order
It is the question we get asked more than any other at the front desk. Sauna first, or cryo first?
Contrast therapy at Recover Well is two services, back to back. Infrared sauna and cryotherapy. There are only two ways to run it, and the order you choose changes how you feel for the rest of the day.
Neither one is wrong. They are just built for different days.
What contrast therapy actually does
Alternating heat and cold creates what researchers call the vascular pump. Heat widens your blood vessels. Cold narrows them. Move between the two and you get a rush of circulation that passive rest simply does not produce.
A 2025 scoping review in the Journal of Clinical Medicine pulled together randomized trials published between 2004 and 2024 and found contrast therapy reduced pain, improved joint range of motion, and eased exercise-related soreness more effectively than rest or a single temperature on its own.
You get that benefit either direction. What changes is the exit.
Option one: sauna, then cryo
You leave energized
This is our most requested order, and the one we point most first-timers toward.
Starting in the sauna relaxes muscle tissue and opens circulation before you ask your body to handle the cold. It is a gentler on-ramp. Three minutes of cryo feels a lot shorter when you walk in already warm.
There is a hormonal reason too. Heating the body before cold exposure amplifies the norepinephrine response you get from cryotherapy. That is the neurotransmitter behind the sharp, clear-headed feeling people chase after a cold session.
Ending on cold is also where the alertness comes from, and that part is measurable. Norepinephrine climbs roughly 75 percent after a whole-body cryo session. That is the catecholamine response behind the switched-on feeling.
Worth saying plainly: the popular advice to always finish cold is not settled science. It is a reasonable rule of thumb built on the catecholamine data, not the result of a head-to-head trial. Pick the finish that matches your day.
Best for: mornings, midday resets, post-workout soreness, and any day you want to walk out switched on.
Option two: cryo, then sauna
You leave calm
Flip the order and you flip the outcome.
Opening with cold delivers a strong, immediate hit of alertness and a real anti-inflammatory response while your body is still fresh. Then the sauna takes over. Heat keeps your vessels dilated and shifts you toward parasympathetic mode, the rest-and-digest side of your nervous system.
You leave warm, loose, and heavy-limbed instead of wired. The infrared session also gives you a longer, slower window to actually sit still, which is half the point for a lot of our guests.
Best for: evenings, high-stress weeks, deep relaxation days, and the nights you want to go home and sleep well.
One thing to know if you lift
You may have seen that cold exposure blunts muscle growth. It is worth knowing where that finding actually comes from.
A 2024 meta-analysis in the European Journal of Sport Science found that regular cold water immersion right after resistance training reduces gains in muscle size and strength. The mechanism is temperature. Ten to fifteen minutes submerged drops the temperature of the muscle tissue itself by several degrees and holds it there long enough to dampen the local signaling that drives growth.
Cryotherapy is a different exposure. Three minutes of cold air does cool the muscle, but only by around one to one and a half degrees, and not for long.
Which raises a fair question. If the muscle barely gets cold, how does cryo do anything? Because most of the effect is not the cooling. The extreme cold at your skin triggers a sharp nervous system response. Blood vessels constrict, norepinephrine climbs by roughly 75 percent, and as you rewarm those vessels open back up and flush the area. That is where the anti-inflammatory effect and the mood lift come from.
So the concern is smaller here than the headlines suggest, because the mechanism that blunts muscle growth is the one cryo engages least. If you are training specifically for size and want to be cautious, leave a few hours between heavy lifting and any cold exposure. That is a cleaner fix than reordering your session, because what matters is timing relative to your workout, not which room you walk into first.
Endurance work and general soreness do not carry this tradeoff at all.
A few things that help
Hydrate before and after. Electrolytes help more than plain water.
Stand up slowly between services, and sit down if you feel light-headed.
Dry off fully before cryo.
Book it with a friend. Accountability is the reason people stay consistent, and consistency is the reason it works.
How often
One to two times a week if you are new. Three to four if you are training hard or managing chronic soreness. Two a week is a solid maintenance rhythm for most people.
Consistency beats intensity here. The benefits compound over weeks, not sessions.
Who should check with a doctor first
Contrast therapy is a real physiological stressor, and that is what makes it work. Talk to your physician before you start if you have cardiovascular disease, uncontrolled high blood pressure, Raynaud's, peripheral vascular disease, or if you are pregnant.

Want calm, softer muscles, and better sleep? Cryo, then sauna.
